Set up your Wordpress site to be easy to expand and maintain
When you host your project on the New Media Lab server, we require you to keep your software reasonably up to date. Though some updates are urgent, others are less important or even better to avoid.
Why we strongly recommend open source programs & several programs we like for web work: Wordpress, Omeka, MediaWiki, and Drupal
What is web hosting? How does your site get a domain name? What does a server do?
How does a server work? What do terms like LAMP, Apache, MySQL, and PHP mean?
How do browsers read web pages? What are HTML, CSS, and JavaScript? What are other formats, such as XML and JSON?
How can you set up your CMS, plugin, or theme? Make sense of installation instructions and apply them to the NML server.
How to upload and modify your files on the server, especially using the application FileZilla
Starting to build your site, keeping it up to date, creating a development version for new sections and testing updates
How to back up your site files and database, tips for maintaining and organizing your backups
How to keep your site online after leaving the NML, options for maintaining or archiving your site

How do you create maps and work with spacial data? Do you need to learn GIS software? (Probably not.) What other tools can create maps?
